Fall always makes us slow down and pay a little more attention to our routines. We notice the cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, and the cozy habits that come with the season. Our cats have routines too, and one of the easiest ways to keep an eye on their everyday wellness is by paying attention to their litter box, believe it or not!
It may not be the most glamorous part of being a cat parent, but the litter box can tell you a surprising amount about your cat. Changes in bathroom habits can sometimes be an early clue that something is different, especially when it comes to digestion and overall health. Knowing what’s normal for your cat makes it easier to notice when something changes.
Gut health can be influenced by many everyday things, including diet, hydration, stress, and changes in routine. Fall can bring changes to all of these. Maybe your schedule shifts, your cat is spending more time indoors, or you're introducing a new food. Even small changes can sometimes affect digestion.
That’s why it’s helpful to know your cat’s usual habits. Are they eating and drinking normally? Are they using the litter box as they usually do? Have you noticed a change in their stool, frequency, or behavior? An occasional difference doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong, but persistent or significant changes are worth discussing with your veterinarian.
For multi-cat households especially, keeping track of litter-box habits can be challenging. You may know something has changed without knowing which cat it involves. Because of that I have to mention here that the Military Cat Club October sweepstakes prize is a
Petivity Smart Litter Box as part of our focus on cat wellness...and there are multiple winners, not just ONE winner! Petivity helps cat parents keep a closer eye on litter-box activity and everyday patterns, giving you another way to stay informed about what’s normal for your cat. It can also tell the difference between one cat and another if you live in a multiple cat home.
Of course, no smart litter box replaces veterinary care. The goal is not to worry about every little change, but to have a better understanding of your cat's normal routine so you can recognize when something truly seems different.
Take a few extra minutes this season to check in on the little things. Keep fresh water available, stick to a consistent diet and routine when possible, and pay attention to those everyday litter-box habits. Knowing your cat's normal is one of the simplest ways to look after their wellness.
Good luck,
cat parents!
