Refreshing Litter Box Routines for Warmer Weather

By Rachel S.

Is it warming up where you are… or are you still staring at snow boots by the door? Where I am, it is already 70 to 80 degrees. In February. The windows are open. The air feels different, and if you have a cat, you know exactly what that means.

The litter box situation changes.

Warmer weather hits and suddenly everything smells stronger, even if you scoop daily, heat has a way of amplifying what winter politely hides. However, whether you are in early sunshine or still defrosting from snowstorms, March is the perfect time to refresh your litter box routine.

First, if it is warm where you are, crack a window nearby if possible. Air circulation makes a huge difference in keeping odors from settling. If you are still in colder temps, even running a small air purifier, which you can enter in for a chance to win one this month with the Military Pet Club, near the litter area can help.

Second, upgrade the deep clean. Winter routines are survival mode. Spring routines are reset mode. Empty the entire box and wash it with warm water and mild soap. Dry it completely before refilling. This is also a great time to check for scratches in the plastic. Those tiny grooves trap odor over time. If your box is looking worn, spring might be your sign to replace it.

Third, adjust your scooping schedule. In warmer climates, twice a day scooping can make a noticeable difference. It sounds simple, but heat accelerates odor. More frequent scooping keeps the whole space fresher for both of you.

Also, warmer weather means shedding season is coming. More fur floating around the litter area means more tracking. A simple litter mat refresh or even shaking it out weekly makes a huge difference. Spring cleaning is not just about closets and cabinets. It is about resetting the small routines that quietly affect your everyday life.

Whether you are enjoying sunshine already or waiting for the snow to melt, March is your reminder: fresh box, fresh air, fresh start. Your cat may not say thank you, but they will absolutely notice.
