Sun’s Out, Paws Out: Can Cats Get Sunburned?

By Rachel S.

It’s officially summer, and it is HOT! Windows are open, birds are chirping, and your cat is likely stretched out in that one golden beam of sunlight on a window perch like they own the whole place, because, let’s be honest, they do. They’re living rent free. But while they soak up those rays, one question comes to mind: can cats get sunburned? I’ve always wondered this.

Surprisingly, YES, cats indeed can get sunburned, especially those with light-colored fur, thin coats, or hairless breeds like Sphynxes. The areas most at risk are the ears, nose, and belly, where fur is sparse or skin is exposed. Too much sun can lead to red, irritated skin, peeling, and in severe cases, even skin cancer like squamous cell carcinoma.

How to Keep Your Cat Safe in the Sun:
• Limit sunbathing hours: Early mornings or late afternoons are safer than high noon.
• Close the blinds: UV rays can come through windows, so limit sun exposure indoors too.
• Use pet-safe sunscreen: Only products made specifically for cats, human sunscreen can be toxic.
• Provide shady retreats: Even indoors, offer shaded napping spots with cool airflow.

Your cat can still enjoy summer sunshine, you just want to keep things balanced, safe, and cozy. Want more seasonal tips, exclusive birthday gifts, and chances to win pawsome prizes?
