Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate—there’s something about the cozy vibes, chocolates, and fresh flowers that makes it so special. But if you’re a cat owner like me, you know this day comes with a few hidden dangers for our furry friends. Here’s how I keep my mischievous kitty safe during the holiday.
First up: chocolates. I love indulging in heart-shaped boxes of truffles, but chocolate is a big no-no for cats. It’s toxic to them, so I make sure to store my sweets somewhere my curious kitty can’t reach. For me, that means keeping the candy box tucked away in a closed cabinet.
Flowers are another sneaky hazard. As much as I love a beautiful bouquet, some flowers—like lilies—can be downright deadly for cats. Whenever I receive flowers, I double-check every stem to make sure none are toxic. If I’m unsure, I call my florist or look up a list of safe blooms. Better safe than sorry, right?
Then there’s the wrapping paper and ribbons. My cat loves playing with anything that crinkles or dangles, but eating those materials can cause serious health issues. I keep all wrapping supplies and gift decorations out of sight once I’m done unwrapping presents.
Finally, I always set aside some time to spoil my cat, too. Instead of chocolates or flowers, I give her her favorite treats or a fun new toy to bat around. She loves the attention, and it helps keep her entertained while I enjoy my Valentine’s Day festivities.
Celebrating Valentine’s Day with my cat by my side makes it even more special. With a little extra care, it’s easy to keep your feline friend safe and happy on this sweet holiday!
